Some of the things they may show you are how you are to take insulin shots if you are diabetic and never took them before.
That is one good thing about the nurses that are willing to come to the house to show you something new that needs to be done for your health. There are even the nurses that come to the house when you have a new baby. They will be able to help show you the proper way for you to care for the newborn.
If you were to sit down and think about it there are many different kinds of nurses out there in the nursing field that is there to help you out in anything that you are in need of. There is only one big problem in the nursing field^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ which is that there are not enough nurses to adequately cover all the needs in the world. There are some that say there is going to be almost a million nurses’ shortage by the year of 2020.
If you were to think about it there are going to be a lot of people hurting in the long run if the shortage continues to grow each year. You may end up seeing more doctors combining their practices together because they do not have the nursing staff that is needed to run their own practice. Then you could even notice that you may not receive the adequate care for a problem that you may be having.
What’s stopping you to become a nurse? It’s a job that will fulfill your calling and it’s a job that you can show your care and concern for people.

There is a general feeling that nursing as a profession needs more of hands-on experience than pure academic knowledge. There is a reason or two there. We are known to laud the role of nurses who have excellent practical abilities and management supervision skills.
But apart from the too-obvious hospital care jobs^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurses have definitive roles to play in many other healthcare functions^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and even in stellar roles in healthcare industry. It needs no telling that higher education in nursing is imperative for nurses to work in senior positions^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ many of which are suitable for none else than nurses themselves.
In practice however^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ there is lukewarm response among nursing students to pursue higher degrees^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ perhaps for reasons of convenience and cost. For example^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ though numbers of nurses having a BSN degree has increased during the last four decades^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ yet only about 44% of 2.7 million nurses currently hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Given the advent of advanced medical treatment and progressively longer lifespan of people^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ there is no denying that the nursing practice is set to undergo many changes in sync with technology and need. Keeping this in perspective^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ in October 2004^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) agreed in a resolution to support the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) as a terminal practice degree. The DNP will be different from the PhD in that while the PhD has wider acceptance as being research-focused to supplant the master’s degree^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ the DNP is proposed to be for those nurses who want an advanced practice role^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ such as nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist. A brief round-up of various advanced nursing degrees is provided below:
1. RN to BSN If you commenced your career in nursing with an associate degree or a diploma^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ you may consider attaining your bachelor’s degree. Many advanced nursing positions today are increasingly looking for a minimum of bachelor’s degree. The Baltimore group claims the TV show !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGis perpetuating long-standing misrepresentations that are contributing to the nursing shortage.!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG
Never mind the fact that ER – watched by 20 million viewers – is far from reality television. The notion that the show is contributing to the nursing shortage is simply untrue. This TV program could depict nursing as the most glamorous career on the planet and real nurses would still be leaving their hospital jobs in droves.
Nurses are quitting because they are understaffed^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ underappreciated^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ underinsured^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ underpaid and under-you-name-it. Most nurses complain about the lack of respect from doctors. Sure you hear about record-breaking salaries and bonuses^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ but compared to whose record? At an average pay of $22 an hour^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurses are still among the lowest-paid professionals in this country.
Managed care is another reason nurses are leaving the bedside. It goes against everything our profession stands for. Under managed care^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurses are frequently denied the opportunity to deliver the quality of care they expect to deliver. Some patients die unnecessarily because nurses have too little time to spend with them. Yet when everything turns sour^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurses face more responsibility and liability than ever.
Many nurses I know endure nightmarish schedules^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ working 26 weekends and five holidays a year. Nurses also face serious on-the-job risks^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ such as bloodborne pathogens^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ latex allergies and back injuries from those long shifts pounding hospital floors and doing more lifting with less help. Isn't it ironic that the injured and disabled are treating the sick? No wonder nursing numbers are shrinking.
Speaking of disabilities^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ just look around at how many nurses smoke^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ drink and are overweight. Such symptoms of intense stress occur when people have too little time to properly care even for themselves.
Nurses are finding their own answers to these dilemmas. According to an American Nursing Association (ANA) poll^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ almost 19% of nurses do not work in clinical nursing. A study by the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research reveals more than 20% of hospital registered nurses plan to leave their jobs in the next year.
The significant development is not the fact that nurses are leaving or even why they're leaving – that's obvious. The news is where they are going. When nurses aren't valued in one arena^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ they take their nursing education and expertise and go elsewhere. They develop new careers outside traditional healthcare settings.
Maybe the Center for Nursing Advocacy should contemplate that fact. They might even suggest that ER present an episode about a nurse who quits her hospital job to become a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.

In addition^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ today's nursing shortage is being intensified by three new phenomena: managed care^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ on-the-job health risks and alternative careers for nurses.
Managed Care Compromises Nursing Care
In spite of giving more than they have to give every day^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurses in all settings can no longer deliver the level of care of which they are capable. Nurses who remember the !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGgood old days!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG battle the shame of knowing they're partially responsible for the deaths of 98^UFGJNGFHSD%$^000 patients in hospitals every year. That death toll is equivalent to a jumbo jet crash every other day^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ yet the number doesn't even include patients who become victims of injury and illness while in the hospital.
Why are patients dying unnecessarily? Nurses have less time to see more patients. They have more to do and fewer tools to do it with. They must contend with increasingly complex equipment and less trained staff. LVNs/LPNs^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurse's aides and nursing assistants are replacing skilled nurses at the bedside. Yet nurses still get little respect and face more responsibility when everything turns sour. In this !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGdark age!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG of medicine the words !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGquality of care!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG are becoming an oxymoron.
This trend goes against our education and against our very nature as nurses. Certainly some people get into nursing solely to make a living and don't progress beyond that stage. They're part of the problem. For most of us^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ though^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nursing is more than a profession – it's a calling that attracts the !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGbest and the brightest!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG who want to make a difference in people's lives.
You won't find a more caring group than nurses. Try having an anaphylactic reaction at a lawyers' conference and see how many people come to your aid without a business card in hand.
Yet today^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ despite all our caring^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ we're denied the ability to provide quality care. With the exception of a few great facilities around the country^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ we can no longer find jobs that allow us to fulfill the mission we defined for ourselves when we entered this profession. No wonder so many nurses are quitting.
Nurse Healers Fear For Their Own Health
Not only are nurses exhausted – we the healers fear for our own health. On-the-job health risks for nurses range far beyond bloodborne pathogens and latex allergies (not to mention feeling like aliens dressed in our goggles^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ masks and gloves). We face obvious occupational hazards^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ such as back injuries from long shifts pounding hospital halls and doing more lifting with less help.
We also face the less obvious hazards that aren't just physical. Sheer exhaustion from our overwhelming schedules and our unsupportive work environment take a heavy toll.
Look around you at how many nurses smoke^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ drink and are overweight. These are signs of deep unhappiness and of not having time to take proper care of ourselves. Between juggling life^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ family and jobs^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ nurses often find it far easier to wolf down fast food on our 10-minute lunch break than to prepare a healthy brown-bag meal.
Isn't it ironic that the injured and disabled are treating the sick? No wonder the nurses dangerous workplace is yet another reason for the flight of such talented caregivers.
Nurses Choose a New Career and a New Life
The bright spot in this grim scenario – and the most distinctive aspect of today's nursing shortage – is that we can enjoy better^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ more satisfying careers as nurses elsewhere. Admit it^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ you know nurses who've left traditional nursing and are prospering and much happier in their new positions. Today^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ we're leaving younger^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ smarter and better qualified than ever before. We are creating our future rather than being victims of it.
Without even leaving the hospital setting^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ we are using our skills and training in areas we never thought possible: risk management^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ utilization review^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ accreditation and research. Beyond the hospital we're experiencing success selling medical- and nursing-related products^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ such as equipment^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ instruments^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ drugs and blood products. Diploma and Associate Degree RN’s will clearly tell you that they can run rings around BSN program graduates when it comes to patient care. They’ll explain that they have more actual clinical experience and patient care know how in their little finger than a new BSN grad^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and 99% of the time they’re right about that! I’ll be the first to admit that if I get seriously ill I’m hoping that my nurse graduated from a diploma program like the one they used to offer at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Those nurses had so much training and hands on care experience by the time they graduated that few physicians could hold a candle to them on their best day.
This isn’t about whether BSN nurses are better than ADN or Diploma nurses
Up until a few years ago I would have been just as emotional as the next nurse in arguing against the very idea of making the BSN degree the minimum educational level to practice as a professional nurse. The arguments were many and seemed to make sense – no difference in pay for a BSN versus an ADN or Diploma nurse^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ we all do the same job etc….
But The Times^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ They Are a Changing…. And so has my point of view
“Rapidly expanding clinical knowledge and mounting complexities in health care mandate that professional nurses possess educational preparation commensurate with the diversified responsibilities required of them. As health care shifts from hospital-centered^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ inpatient care to more primary and preventive care throughout the community^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ the health system requires registered nurses who not only can practice across multiple settings - both within and beyond hospitals - but can function with more independence in clinical decision making^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ case management^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ provision of direct bedside care^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ supervision of unlicensed aides and other support personnel^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ guiding patients through the maze of health care resources^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and educating patients on treatment regimens and adoption of healthy lifestyles. Nursing is a dynamic profession and lifelong learning is essential for nurses to stay current with the increased complexity of the healthcare needs of today and into the future. In other words^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ the needs of our patients are changing^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ as we must change in order to be prepared to better serve that need.
BSN degree nurses are better prepared to meet patient needs
The main difference in study between an ADN and BSN is the emphasis on additional education in leadership and management^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ wellness^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and community nursing. BSN prepared nurses possess greater knowledge of health promotion^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ disease prevention^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and risk reduction as well as illness and disease management and are prepared to assist individuals^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ groups^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and communities to prevent disease and achieve optimum levels of wellness. As nurses expand their role and move further into providing more community based primary care delivery the need for BSN prepared nurses is apparent.
Having a BSN degree means more career opportunities
The health system's increasing demand for front-line primary care^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and the accelerating drive toward managed care^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ prevention^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and cost-efficiency^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ are driving the nation's need for nurses who are prepared to practice in non-structured setting and interact directly with the public in matters of providing health and prevention services to the community^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and that requires a BSN prepared nurse for starters.
Am I saying that every RN should become a BSN?
No^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ of course not! That’s an individual choice each of you needs to make for yourselves. Don’t do it for money. In many cases there’s no benefit in pay for having a BSN versus an ADN or Diploma- at least initially. The truth however is that increased education leads to increased responsibilities and increased career opportunities which give rise in turn to increased pay.
BSN nurses will have more career options than ADN and Diploma nurses. Diploma nursing programs are all but extinct anymore and I expect the ADN programs will vanish sometime in the future as well^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ but those of you who are already licensed will continue to be able to practice as an RN. You might find your job opportunities becoming narrower in the near future however. North Dakota has required all new nurse hires to possess a BSN degree since 1987. The New York State Board has similar legislation pending. The Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs began requiring all new hires to possess at least a BSN degree in 2005. Who knows what’s coming next?
Having a BSN degree allows more opportunity for employment^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ increased responsibility^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and career progression. It opens the door for professional certification in specialty areas of nursing practice and leads to an expanded role as a provider^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ designer^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ manager^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and coordinator of patient care as well as provides the foundation for graduate education.
Today’s working RN’s can attain a BSN degree without sacrificing their present job or income by going through an accredited online program. Programs are available that offer NLN accredited LPN to RN/BSN degrees^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ RN to BSN degrees^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ RN/ BSN to Master’s degrees^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and even PhD in Nursing. Duty: This is generally the most straight forward element to prove in a medical malpractice case. Once a nurse accepts report and assigned patients the nurse has agreed to care for those patients. By accepting the assigned patients the nurse has assumed a duty to treat the patient with that degree of skill^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ care^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ and diligence possessed or exercised by competent and careful nurses. One situation that provides exemption from !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGduty!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG would be care provided in a situation covered by Good Samaritan Statutes.
Legal Causation: Legal Causation is the second major hurdle that must be overcome for a successful malpractice plaintiff. The plaintiff must establish that had standards of care been followed^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ the injury or damages to the patient would have been avoided. A legal cause of action for negligence usually exists when it is determined that the breach of the standard of care proximately caused damages^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ usually physical or emotional in nature to the victim.
Damages: Was unreasonable^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ careless or inappropriate behavior on the part of the nurse^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ hospital or other health care provider the proximate cause of injury or damages to the patient or client? Substantial injuries caused by breach of the standards of care that satisfy the !%EJNQ&%$%$@HGdamages!%EJNQ&%$%$@HG element of a medical malpractice claim include:
- Death
- Disability
- Deformity
- Additional hospitalization or surgery to correct a medical error
- Severe and prolonged pain
Remember that medical errors can happen during even the most routine tasks^UFGJNGFHSD%$^ such as when a hospital patient is given a the wrong diet. Staffing shortages or patient overload does not relieve you of your responsibilities to manage each and every aspect of care for your patients! If you believe you are being assigned more patients than you can care for safely during your shift voice your objections to your charge nurse and nursing supervisor! Once you accept the patient load you assume the legal duty for their care. Keep these elements of malpractice in mind and be sure you can meet the standards of care for your nursing specialty before accepting your patient assignment.
Nurses would be advised to carry their own professional liability insurance rather than rely on their employer's umbrella policy to protect them in case of a malpractice suit. Never expect your employer's interests in the case of a lawsuit to be the same as yours!
