The Growth Job Of Our Generation- Nursing
By Craig Smith-
If you have considered a career in the nursing profession, but wondered if there was a significant future in it, wonder no more. The U.S. has suffered a nursing shortage in recent history and there hasn't been a better time to make your career in this exciting field. It's true that it takes a special type of person to excel in the demanding medical field, but if you have the drive and compassion to take care of people in any situation there are several reasons why nursing is the growth job of this generation.

It has probably already come to your attention that there are more nurses than doctors. The reason for this is obvious. A doctor can see several patients in a day and then leave the rest of the work up to his or her competent nursing staff. As a matter of fact, RN's make up the largest percentage of the health care industry. Currently there are roughly 2.4 million jobs for RNs. That leaves a lot of room for potential growth. For qualified candidates, the sky is the limit in terms of professional growth and satisfaction.

Nurses have many options in terms of where they work as well. Those who want regular hours and evenings off will fit in well at a traditional doctor's office. Most of the time, the hours are Monday through Friday with most evenings off. A nurse in this setting may be requested to work some Saturdays though. For registered nurses, 3 out of 5 jobs will be found in hospitals. The advantage there is all of the various specialties found in hospitals. A qualified nurse could work in the surgery wing or with cardiac patients. There are always the options of the birthing centers or in the ER. The choice is almost limitless and leaves a lot of room for growth and learning.

It is unfortunate that many employers claim that it is difficult to attract and keep good registered nurses. This rewarding career puts nurses in a position to make good changes in the

lives of all of their patients. It isn't as if a nurse is limited to just working as a support person in a hospital or doctor's office. Many are choosing to further their education and become nurse practitioners. This elevated status gives the nurse practitioner more flexibility in the amount and type of care they are allowed to provide. In many cases, nurse practitioners see patients independently and only consult with an MD in the most extreme of cases. Of course, if the RN prefers to stay in the more traditional role, there are literally dozens of different specialties to choose from and the direction their career takes is up to them. With the current nursing shortage, a well trained nurse can pretty much go into whichever field he or she chooses.

For example, of the many options available for registered nurses, hospital and doctors office work are just the tip of the iceberg. Nurses are called on to educate newly diagnosed patients and their families about nutrition, medications, and general care. They also are often trained to perform a battery of different tests and analyze the results. Some nurses chose to take their education to a different level and become involved with therapy and rehabilitation. Some discover a calling to help the families of terminally ill patients deal with their grief and feelings. This specialty requires more training, but is a worth while endeavor for the right type of nurse. Nursing is the growth job for this generation because it isn't just taking temperatures anymore.
